We provide assistance throughout the whole implementation process. There are several elements necessary to produce a long-term, fundamental enhancement of the board’s governance role:

The organisation, along with its directors and officers, must fully understand the principles and concepts of Policy Governance®. As it is very important that all directors have sufficient and common understanding of what is entailed, a one-day introduction to the model is strongly recommended;

• After the one-day introduction, the Board must then make an informed choice to move ahead with the necessary implementation, the ongoing maintenance, and continual self-evaluation;
• Next, the Board must develop appropriate policies — actual documents based on the Policy Governance® model, but embodying the values and peculiar circumstances of the organisation. This usually takes a couple of days if consulting assistance is used (several months if at all, if no assistance is used); and
• Following this, the Board must move on to the crucial “ends” policy development now that the governance framework is in place. This stage involves putting the long term results desired by the Board (the organisation’s raison d’être, in effect) into much more output terminology than usually found in strategic plans and goals.
